THE POWER AND THE GORY
Father Mac and Peter officiate at a funeral for 'Big Bertie' O'Doyle, the local Dail member, two of whose pallbearers are Quigley and Sean Dooley ("plumber, councillor and anti-christ" according to Father Mac), who obviously loathe each other. Father Mac tries to persuade Quigley to stand for election in O'Doyle's place, but he says he's not interested. The next thing we see is his car emblazoned with election posters, while his voice booms out over megaphones on its roof. Dooley's doing the same, and they conduct a row over the megaphones.
Leo McGarvey, a TV reporter and former boyfriend of Assumpta, arrives to cover the by-election and to try to woo her back. Assumpta is keen to indicate to Peter that she is not interested.
Peter is shocked when Quigley pays for the discordant church bell of St Joseph's to be replaced, using it to win votes, but Father Mac is quite happy with the arrangement. Then Quigley reveals that the new full peal is in fact, a tape of the bells of Galway Cathedral and soon, to Peter's horror, he is also broadcasting his electoral message over the church's broadcasting system.
Leo confides his love for Assumpta to Peter, telling him he thinks she is interested in someone else. Careful not to display any feelings he has on the subject, Peter advises him to talk to her frankly about his feelings for her.
Dooley wins the election and Quigley and Father Mac reveal that they both voted for him, to ensure he got shipped off to Dublin, where he could do no harm to them. Quigley never intended to win, but his candidacy stopped another man standing who might have defeated Dooley.
Leo realises he's wasting his time hoping for Assumpta to go away with him and leaves, but not before he implies (and she does not deny) that it is Peter she cares for.
