SERIES 3 - EPISODE 11

THE RECKONING

Peter has returned to Ballykissangel after the death of his mother. The regulars are sympathetic, although this does not stop Padraig telling a rather unfortunate joke in Peter's hearing.

They are gathered in the pub late one night to discuss plans for the coming Food Fair. Quigley boasts about his plans to open a Chinese restaurant, with the help of Shamie, his genuine Chinese chef. The lights in the pub go out and Assumpta goes down into the cellar to sort out the fuse box. Peter helps her, but he seems distracted.

That night, Niamh and Ambrose go out for the night and, due to a mix up, Peter and Assumpta turn up to babysit. They talk about the Chinese cooking competition; Peter is practising his dish. There is tension between them. Finally, Peter tells her he cannot stop thinking about her and doesn't know what to do about it. They kiss. Assumpta breaks away appalled and runs out.

The regulars are arguing about recipes in the pub when Assumpta bursts in, obviously upset. Later that night she goes to find Peter at his house, still angry with him. He tells her he needs time to think. The next morning they are in court.

Quigley goes to see Shamie, who is working at another restaurant. The restaurant owner warns Quigley off. Peter and Assumpta go for a walk together up the mountain. Peter tells Assumpta about his feeling for her, and she says she feels the same. Later, Father Mac confronts Peter; he knows what he is going through, and tells Peter that he must decide between the Church and Assumpta.

Peter tells Assumpta he wants to leave the priesthood, if she'll only agree. She does. It is the evening of the Food Fair. The dishes are being judged. Quigley produces a ridiculously opulent dish that has been cooked by Shamie. The others demand his disqualification. Shamie admits to helping everyone except Peter.

The lights go out again, and Assumpta heads for the cellar. A while later, a loud bang is heard, and running for the cellar, they find Assumpta lifeless beside the fusebox. As Dr Ryan gives first aid, Peter is in despair. Father Mac tells Peter he must give her the last rights. Peter remembering a conversation he once had with her, refuses, until, Brendan and Niamh plead with him to do it. Peter then leaves the pub and walks off into the dark and rain.
