SERIES 2 - EPISODE 8

CHINESE WHISPERS

Two strangers (Tom and Jerry) arrive in town and act suspiciously. Ambrose approaches them and they show him ID, which makes him back off respectfully. Tom and Jerry are later seen watching Quigley buy materials from the shop of his old enemy Dooley.

Quigley is burgled. Money is taken, but he refuses to tell the police. He calls his accountant, Cathal to tell him that his account books have also gone missing. The books are dodgy. Cathal wonders whether it is the Revenue themselves that might have stolen them. He tells Niamh. Niamh, who has registered Ambrose's odd reaction to the strangers, guesses that they might be the revenue men. She demands that Ambrose tell her, but he refuses, though he drops dark hints. She alerts Quigley, who passes on the news to the rest of the village. Immediately, everyone finds reasons why the revenue men are after them.

Quigley receives a ransom demand for his stolen books. Cathal advises him to pay. He drops the money off and we see it is picked up by Mossy Phelan. Meanwhile, Peter finds the missing books under a pew in the church. He hides them in his shed.

Niamh has been suspecting she is pregnant again. Eventually she goes to the doctor and has it confirmed. After some initial nerves, she delighted.

Eventually, Peter has had enough of all the stress and fear being caused by the two men amongst the villagers. He decides to help them, even if that means acting illegally himself. This includes hiding a load of duty free lager belonging to Assumpta.

Mossy Phelan tells Quigley where the books are and identifies himself. When he can't find them, Quigley asks Peter who takes him to where the books are hidden, which is also where Assumpta's illegal booze is hidden. There is a sticky moment when the 'revenue men' themselves walk in. Quigley claims the drink is for a planned party and Niamh announces that the party is because she's pregnant. The party then has to go ahead. It is subdues, until Brendan and Siobhan burst in with the news that the 'revenue men' are actually from the fraud squad and that they had been after Dooley whom they have just arrested.
