"I think Kathleen has become a little more real as the series goes on," says Aine Ni Mhuiri of her role as the village shopkeeper with an eye and ear to all that happens in the village. "More aspects of her are starting to emerge, she's becoming more a part of the community. She continues to deepen as a character. On the one hand, she comes across as a loner, yet also a person who is involved in so many aspects of the village social life that she would never lack for company. She's an essential character in a way, and I think many women of that age can identify with her."
Two years back, when an old boyfriend of Kathleen's reappeared in her life, there was a great response from people who were delighted that she had a bit of romance in her life. "I felt great that her character could actually pull that storyline off - so much of that romantic side of things is dominated by the young, it was great to let Kathleen have her day in the sun as well," she says, proudly.
In both her age and attitude, Kathleen stands on the cusp of past and present in Ballykissangel - someone whose values and virtues came from a generation almost forgotten in the changing faces all around her. "Kathleen remembers a different Ireland and the extraordinary thing for her is to see it changing before her very eyes. I think that's very much a reflection of what is actually happening in the country itself these days - something older people are much more conscious of than the younger generation."
Kathleen's close relationship with Father Mac is another manifestation of these older values, Aine believes. "There is a sense of her hanging on to the old values - the Church would be a great solace for someone like Kathleen. Her relationship with Father Mac seems to pre-date his position as the parish priest - they knew each other as youngsters, you feel there's a shared history there. The relationship dynamic between them is very interesting for me."
Having worked for many years as a member of the Abbey Theatre, as well as doing seven seasons as Lily on RTE's Fair City, Kathleen has found that Ballykissangel has brought a wonderful contrast to her life as an actor. "I can remember times as an actor when it was a constant struggle to find work. You never wanted any free time in case the roles suddenly dried up. I suppose that's part and parcel of the actor's life. One of the wonderful things for me on Ballykissangel is the luxury of constant work and the break that follows."
