In his role as the schoolteacher and regular pint-drinker in Fitzgerald's, Brendan Kearney has undergone subtle changes over the years, not least of which being his shared parenthood of baby Aisling with veterinary surgeon Siobhan.

Ballykissangel has seen Brendan move from being just another smart-talking regular in the pub into the more complex realm of father and wished-for husband, and actor Gary Whelan is very pleased with the change. "Brendan plays at the role of being married to Siobhan because he wants to have a family. He's a man of great regularity - he likes his fishing, doing his Irish Times crossword and having his pint of Guinness in the pub.

"If the newspaper stopped printing the crossword or his pint didn't appear in the pub (which happened one day), he would be completely knocked out or confused. Aisling arrived from a one-night stand with Siobhan, and while they don't have an on-going sexual relationship or even live under the same roof, Brendan just pretends that they're married and therefore should do all those domesticated things that married couples do."

Gary Whelan's peaceful life as the village schoolmaster in Ballyk was preceded by an altogether more urban existence as Detective Inspector Haines in The Bill. And with a happy marriage and five kids who cluster around him on the set of Ballykissangel, the actor is quick to point out that there are few real-life parallels between himself and Brendan.
