Episode summary
Five ordinary guys meet on Tuesday
nights to play five-a-side football, reminisce about their
favourite team Crystal Palace's glory days which - like their
own - are well behind them. The result? Eleven one against
and one sent off. The revenge? Is golden. The ritual? Down
the pub, onto a club, fail to pick up some women, play subutteo,
arrive home late a mixture of pissed, depressed and horny.
Beneath the ribaldry and macho bonhomie
all five are in crisis.
Jamie is a call operator, a job he
despises . His lack of self belief taints his relationship
with his partner Louise as, suffering from impotence, he becomes
increasingly sexually dysfunctional. Louise is supportive
and loving, but the more she tries to get close to him the
more she's pushed away.
Mac is a Senior House Officer desperate
for promotion, but he doesn't have the contacts or social
skills to further his career. He also feels increasingly under
pressure from his wife Katie who is failing to conceive despite
his best attempts.
Des is an affable, bumbling guy who
loves his kids. His wife Lyn is spending longer hours at work
and grabs every opportunity to back out of family life, while
he's left balancing his job as a security guard with running
their home.
Dwight has a constant battle with
Vic, his father, who can't leave the past behind him. Dwight's
working hard to hold it all together, keep fit and is even
going to a therapist. Now his job as a fitness instructor
is part of his new life, but Vic is ever present and attempting
to undermine it all.
Jason is managing a club that is going
nowhere but he doesn't care as long as he has his mates around
and can screw the waitresses. He is always trying to prove
himself, secretly filming his sexual conquests to brag to
his mates.
Slowly the pressures grow in each
of their lives and they are all feeling the heat. Jamie is
sacked. Des sees his wife with a younger man on a CCTV camera.
Jason's boss, Gemma is telling him to turn the club around.
Dwight is struggling to break the ties with Vic. Mac can't
deal with Katie's sexual demands so gets off on flirting with
Alice, a young nurse at work.
Even football isn't enough of a distraction
and, following Jason's suspension from the pitch, they start
hitting the town instead. Coke, booze and a lap dancing club.
The group are vying with each other and competition becomes
fierce. Jamie's complaining because a girl in the club is
more interested in Dwight. Jason hits a bouncer, bedlam breaks
out. Dwight panics and nicks an escape car which he drives
through a shop front during a police chase. High on the buzz
of danger and utter irresponsibility, everyone's exhilarated,
they've escaped the law and they feel invincible.
Football is forgotten and Jason takes
control leading them all to a sex club. He is lording it,
suggesting group sex and provoking Mac to the point where
he leaves. Later, alone with a girl, Jamie is scared he can't
perform but finally manages it. Jason is cutting coke, instructing
the girls, oblivious to everything but his own ego.
Mac arrives home frustrated and drunk,
forcing himself on Katie for unwanted sex. Later, guilt makes
him agree to a sperm test. The count is low. Jamie's relationship
is also in crisis; he has completely cut himself off from
his girlfriend Louise. But at least Jamie has a job, Mac as
a favour is letting him re-floor his kitchen. Meanwhile Des
is being henpecked by Lyn who even accuses him of turning
their son into a wimp. Dwight is also getting to breaking
point with his father and Jason risks the sack if he doesn't
clean up his act.
Jason suggests a "Cup Run" as a means
for the men to switch all their energies back to nights out
and escape.
Mac's ego is boosted when he has sex
with Alice at work, in the dispensary; it's fast and furious,
causing a bit of damage as bottles are knocked to the floor.
While in the mood Mac pockets a phial of Ketamine and some
syringes - something for the weekend maybe?
Alice fancies Mac and so invites herself
on a night out with him and the team. To Mac's annoyance she
won't take no for an answer and tags along. Jason quickly
latches onto her. Alice is trying to keep up with the lads.
Playing pool, drinking. She confronts Mac about the drugs
she saw him take. A power struggle ensues about taking the
Ketamine. Mac gets the upper hand, Jason is afraid of needles.
After a lot of bravado and talk they all end up taking it,
including Alice. They are all high, sweating and dancing the
night away. Jason and Alice are getting closer and Mac's feeling
humiliated.
Later back at Jason's flat, Des sets
up the subutteo while Jamie puts on some porn. To Mac's disgust,
Jason takes Alice to the bedroom. When Jason emerges leaving
the door open, Mac decides to seize the initiative. Seeing
what he is doing, Jason and then Jamie crowd into the bedroom
and converge on Alice ...
