Alice is young, sassy, new to the
hospital and hes a big crush on colleague Mac. When she gate
crashes the lads' night out she has no idea that the evening
is set to become one of the most devastating of her life.
Playing a rape victim is a brave move
for any actress but when Zoe auditioned she was determined
to take on this role. As she explains: "I'm very proud of
the work done on Men Only. I didn't go through some big emotional
trauma while filming, to say that would undermine people who
really have suffered the pain and violence of rape - that's
something I feel very strongly about. We are actors and I
chose to put myself there, no one forced me to do it."
Zoe is also adamant that Alice is
not just some silly little girl and is in part responsible
for her choices: "She genuinely likes Mac so when he gives
her the brush off she's really upset. She uses Jason to get
back at him and is in a bad way anyway. She's gone out, got
hammered and slept with two of these men but what happens
is still unquestionably rape."
Alice is smart enough to know that
she wouldn't have a leg to stand on in court. I think she
has gone so far down a really nasty, self-destructive avenue
that she just loses all will. She's off her head on Ketamine
and I think you would just get to a stage where you would
just zone out."
As an actress, Zoe's biggest anxiety
is how those closer to her will view the drama: "I'm worried
about my Dad seeing it. I'm not so worried about my Mum, although
it will affect her a lot, I think she'd be able to look at
it in a more rational way. But when my character has been
hurt before in things, my Dad's got quite upset."
One of the aims of this drama is that
for women viewers it should have a revelatory quality: "I
think that's the thing about it, it says 'look, be careful,
this could happen. It is the pack mentality, something uncontrolled
happens in the mind of thirty something men when they're alone
together.
