Mike Thompson
interview:
Timecode: 17:02:03
'When I was at school I never wanted to be a policeman even
though the careers people were all telling me that it would
be a good job for me. Because of my size. Because of my height.
I'm a big boy.'
Commentary:
'Mike Thompson came directly from university to Stanton Police
Force.'

Mike interview:
Timecode: 17:02:39
'I did a psychology degree. I passed it and thought to myself
there's not many jobs in psychology. But there's a mate of mine
who was in the police. And I go in straight away. And believe
it or not I love it. I love it. It's a job that really fulfills
me.'

Commentary:
'Perhaps it's no surprise that Mike's studies have produced
a copper whose's analytical and thoughtful about the public…'
Mike interview:
Timecode: 17:08:59
'You're going into parts of people's lives that're probably
flashpoints of their lives. The only times we turn up is when
someones life's gone to hell. So we turn up and we try to pick
up the pieces.'
Commentary:
'..and about his colleagues.'
Mike interview:
Timecode: 17:10:02
'The sergeant tends to partner me up with a girl called Natalie.
And we get on very well… She's quite hot headed, and I think
in some ways me and her being together is probably good because
I balance her out. I think if we were both totally hot-headed
we'd end up causing chaos. It would be mayhem every time we
got out of our van. I don't like using the term 'good cop bad
cop', but I'm very understanding and she's very direct.'

Commentary:
'But for such a bright young man, Mike seems strangely unambitious.'
Mike interview:
Timecode: 17: 15:48
'I'm not like a lot of policemen who would like to become CID.
I'm not interested in that whatsoever. I believe people who
go into CID are not necessarily cleverer than normal policemen.
But they do believe, in my experience, that they are cleverer.
And they want to exercise their own egos. My ambition is to
stay as a bobby. Do my job. And go in at the brunt end of it.
And sort out the action. And maybe in the future I'll become
a sergeant or something like that. That'd be nice.'

Timecode: 18:20:26

|
Commentary:
'Views like this make it tempting to wonder how clearly Mike
reads himself. Mike is also disarmingly frank about his up-coming
marriage.'
Mike interview:
Timecode: 17:20:59
'I'm engaged to Colleen. Who I've been seeing since I was at
school. If you're getting on with someone well, you've got to
try and make it work. And trying to make it work is what I'm
doing. But I'm sort of questioning it. Questioning the whole
marriage thing.'

Mike interview:
Timecode: 17:19:44
'Because I'm with Natalie every day, I'm probably spending more
time talking to Natalie than I do with Colleen. And I do like
Natalie as a person.'
