'Sergeant Edward Giffin, is a circumspect man - taciturn and
of a guarded disposition.
'Interview clip:
Timecode: 09:02:13'
Interviewer: How do you get on with Scale 1?
Giffin: Ups and downs at first, you know. Found the lads a little
bit difficult initially.
Interviewer: Why was that, do you think?
Giffin: (Pause) Well, they seemed to take exception to the fact
that I'm from the south.
'Commentary:'Sergeant Giffin was brought in when his predecessor,
the long-serving and popular Sergeant Poole, died on the job.
'Giffin Interview:
Timecode: 09:04:12
'I thought taking over from a police sergeant who'd been here
for a number of years would present some difficulties. I was
right in assuming that. But I didn't expect quite so much hostility.
Things settled down in the end though.'

'Interviewer: Any feelings about the way policing has changed
since you first joined? Have the changes been for the good?
Giffin: For the good. I think. (Pause) More community involvement.

And how does he see the individual officer's responsibility
towards these aims?
'Interview Giffin:
Timecode: 09:15:33'
(Pause) Integrity. Honesty. Hard work. Communication skills.
That's about all of it. Main things. Emphasis on hard work.'
Commentary:
'And the probationers coming onto the job?
'Interview Giffin:
Timecode: 09:19:18
'Well, it's like everything really. (Pause) There's good and
bad with everything. You get some who are a bit gungho, and
some who are decent chaps. Any walk of life has that sort of
mix. The police force is no different. You get good coppers.
You get bad coppers. You get bad butchers, you get good butchers.
But I can tell a good copper when I see one.'

'Interview clip:
Timecode: 09:28:45
'Interviewer: How's your relationship with CID?
Giffin: My relationship with them?
Interviewer: Yes. Is it good?
Giffin: I don't have a lot to do with the CID. Only when particular
enquiries encroach on mine. Which happens every now and then,
you know. But I like them to get on with their job. And I'd
like them to let me get on with mine.'

Giffin:

'CID come from a promotional background. And they're going around
in their Armani and flash cars. I think they see themselves
as a bit of a Steve McQueen job, you know. They're not all like
that, but there are one or two who are. Think they're more important
than they really are.'
Commentary:
'Sergeant Giffin knows what's important when he sees it.'
