In an ideal world, Catherine Cusack would happily exist mixing her time on Ballykissangel with her first love - the theatre. Daughter of Irish thespian icon, Cyril Cusack, Catherine and her actor sisters, Niamh, Sorcha and Sinead, grew up in an environment where talk of stage and screen was ever present.
"Having a situation where I could build on my role on Ballyk and then sink my teeth into a nice new play every winter would truly be my version of bliss," she confides. "And so far, that's been pretty much the way things have worked out for me."
As Frankie Sullivan, the village's resident garda, Catherine found herself in unexplored territory in terms of character requirement. "I must admit I was quite intrigued about playing a law-keeper," says Catherine.
As a policewoman who comes directly from Dublin to the small village life of Ballykissangel, Frankie soon learns that things don't work in quite the same way as they do in the big city and integrating with the locals demands that she learn a new set of rules.
Much of Catherine's creative output over the years has been in theatre, most notably Our Lady Of Sligo at The National and the Karel Reisz production of Bridget In Moonlight. Her most memorable television appearance was as the "nanny from hell" in Coronation Street - a role that did much to elevate her dramatic status, despite the reported bags of hate-mail she received as a result of almost destroying the Platts' marriage. Her move to Ballykissangel has boosted her acting profile further. "There's no doubt whatsoever that Ballyk has helped me," she says. "Before Ballyk I did a great deal more stage work than television and now, it's quite amazing the number of people who recognise me."
