"It's hard at the moment to tell where the relationship between Brendan and Siobhan is eventually going to go," says Deirdre Donnelly. "What they have seems to be a non-relationship more than anything else. They're still friends but seem to increasingly spend time arguing, disagreeing and generally being grumpy with each other. I think part of the fun of the relationship is to leave it with the possibility of going in any direction but not to come to a definite conclusion."

As the resident vet in Ballykissangel, Siobhan has changed gradually over the five years she's been in the series. Beginning as a rather harsh woman, well able to drink with the lads and offer her opinion on any topic the bar flies cared to contemplate, she has softened a great deal in recent times - not least because she is now the proud mother of baby Aisling.

"I think Siobhan began as an interesting character anyway. She was an expert on gambling, horseracing and drinking - one of the boys. I think the arrival of the baby has brought a bit of womanliness to her, which is a good thing. It has allowed other aspects to her character to emerge."

As a child of the Dublin suburbs, the opportunity of playing such a rural role continues to fascinate Deirdre, particularly amongst such a richly eccentric cast. "I think Ballyk is quite similar to a lot of Irish villages, in terms of the warmth there, and I think it is one of the show's innate charms. People are always coming up to us when we're filming in Avoca to tell us that. They seem to like the idea that all the characters belong to each other and relate to each other and are concerned about each other. And, of course, everybody likes the madness of the place - another essential ingredient of it all," she says with a laugh.

In addition to her commitment to Ballykissangel, Deirdre continues to work in theatre, as she has done for 30 years. She recently performed in She Stoops To Folly at the Abbey: "Great wigs and costumes, a perfect antidote to my vet's clothes on Ballyk."
