When a young Vincent Sheahan announced that he wanted to become a priest. His father Patrick was relieved, maybe now his son would grow out of his obsession with labour politics and bleeding heart liberalism.
Through his social contact with the local bishop, Patrick secured his son a post in a well-heeled harbourside parish of Sydney. There, opportunities to side with the downtrodden were few - so Vincent did the next best thing...embarrassed the shit out of his parishioners by constant variations on the theme of camels, the eyes of needles and the kingdom of heaven.
One parish though was never going to restrict Vincent, who involved himself separately in all sorts of liberal causes throughout the city. His profile grew and with it the irritation of his seniors. Worse followed when he went back home for a brief holiday and took the stand which became famous throughout Australia...opposing his own father in a labour dispute about pay and conditions.
Vincent was quick-witted and used it often to wounding effect against those he tangled with. He tried not to be cruel though he suspected he had a talent for it and tried to laugh at himself too. Many women fancied him and why not... he was a looker, not perhaps conventionally handsome but he had charm to burn and recognised celibacy was going to be a problem.
And then Vincent made everyones life easier. In yet another tetchy confrontation with his bishop, Vincent asked for a posting to South America. He was quite open about it. He wanted to become a "worker priest", the bishop put Vincent on the next plane out.
For the next five years, Vincent worked his buns off for a community of peasant farmers in the Brazilian interior. Vincent grew up in South America. He calmed down, shouted the odds a lot less and, he would say, achieved more.
Vincent returned to Australia but soon became restless. A further discussion with his bishop about his future led to the offer of travelling again. Not South America this time but southern Ireland...
Father MacAnally has a natural antagonist again.
