JAKE - Paranoid Android

Jake has been friends with Mike and Luce for almost three years. Jake had been seeing a work colleague of Luce's. Afterwards, he stayed in touch with Luce and became increasingly friendly with Mike. They shared a passion for the Net, in those days still a cultish thing. It was like belonging to a secret club.

Jake's recruitment helped transform Mike's embryonic site (original content, dreary appearance) into a thing of beauty. He genuinely believes in the site, enjoying the platform it provides for his creativity.

Jake is the only son of a nitwit mother and an older, Jewish father, Murray. His mother ran off to Scotland with a rich businessman. Alone together, he and his father argued constantly, which is how Jake developed his ever-ready putdowns.

The father / son relationship is uneasy and dysfunctional. The bottom line being that the bond is too great to be broken. Jake finds Murray hard work - he's never forgiven his mother for leaving, but knowing his Dad he can see why she did.

This self-sufficiency and independence at an early age means that Jake already nurses deeply rooted habits and preferences - an armoury on which his harmony with the world depends.
