Flossie, the river actually runs right through the heart of the country. Some of the best salmon fishing in the world is to be had on the Shannon, at least according to my husband, who researches these things carefully. We crossed it by ferry when we were there, and I can't remember for the life of me what the two counties were on either side. Bronn will know. I do remember that it was bigger than I thought it would be. IP: Logged |

Limerick and Clare (I think) are on either side of it as it empties into Galway Bay (again, I think). IP: Logged |

Aha! The Shannon, the only river in Ireland that has made me cry. I was in a rush to get the last ferry across from Clare to Kerry one evening and, of course, missed it. Once the ferry left, I had no choice but to set off on a two hour trip (as opposed to a twenty minute one) around the estuary and in through Limerick. But not before I sat at Killimer quay, looking over at Tarbert in the distance, seeing the ferry chug its way across while bashing the steering wheel in sheer frustration. Anyway, in answer to your question Flossie, the Shannon is the longest river in Ireland at just about 240 miles. It almost separates the country in two, dividing the East from the West. Its source is in the Cuilcagh Mountains in Cavan (known as The Shannon Pot) and it flows through ten different counties, creating the Shannon Estuary at Limerick, where it then meets the Atlantic Ocean. There are three big lakes on it; Lough Allen, Lough Rí and Lough Derg. There's a huge hydro-electric scheme on it in Arndacrusha and it has a massive super-tanker port beside Moneypoint power station in Clare. They purposely built Moneypoint there because the Shannon Estuary is so deep. Shannon town is what we'd call a "new town" built purposely after WWII for the major investment in the area. Shannon airport is located there. You're right Cathy, it has some fantastic fishing spots and waterway cruises. IP: Logged |

The Shannon river rises at Cuilcagh Mountain, County Cavan's highest peak, and flows through 10 of Ireland's 32 Counties. Lakes on the Shannon include Lough Allen, Lough Ree and Lough Derg. Tributaries include the River Suck and the River Brosna. aesop
