We have a "What are you listening to?" topic and a "What are you reading?" topic but do we have a "What are you watching?" topic? I thought we did, or something like it, but I can't find it right off. So . . . Laura and I had a good movie weekend. On dvd we watched "The Mummy", lent to us by Laura's sister Linda, and "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", lent to us by Laura's son Matt. Last night we saw "Riding Giants", a film about big wave surfing, on the big screen in Southampton. Might I add that I drove us all the way there, my first time behind the wheel on that trip! I'm watching a BBC police drama entitled "Dalziel and Pascoe" who in the current episode are investigating a double murder on a Yorkshire University campus. I highly recommend it for those that enjoy a good murder mystery with good performances from the 2 lead police investigators. aesop

Here in the States, the Arts & Entertainment Network used to show "Dalziel and Pascoe," and I loved it. Oh, and "A Touch of Frost," too. But they have gone the way of Fat Sam. IP: Logged |

I think I mentioned Foyle's War, starring Michael Kitchen, on another thread. Great stuff, that. We don't get out to the movies often, but we did get to see Phantom of the Opera over the holidays. It got terrible reviews, but I loved it. There is something about sappy romances that just gets to me. I think that people who are real musicians may have a problem with the musical performances, but since I am tone deaf and everything I know about classical music comes from Looney Tunes, I thought the singing was just fine. I saw "Hotel Rwanda" the other day, a powerful, disturbing, absorbing film. On the lighter side, last night's Masterpiece Theater had the first of two episodes of a BBC production of a Trollope novel, "The Man Who Knew He Was Right" (sound familiar?). Excellent!!! (hi, Cathy). I also have all the tapes of The Pallisers, lent by a friend, and I turn to those to get through the glooms. Also started to watch Ballyk's first season. Again! IP: Logged |

The best film I've seen in the past few months was "Vera Drake". It's the story of an abortionist in Manchester/Blackpool in the 50's. The film is so convincing in it's presentation and so sympathetic to the principal character (Vera Drake) and her family that it manipulates or challenges your beliefs about the abortion issue. I highly recommend it not so much for the subject matter as for what it reveals about the human condition. It's a very thoughtful and emotionally charged film and unlikely a film that you will soon forget... aesop [QUOTE]Originally posted by theamck: IP: Logged |

Yes, Aesop, I also found "Vera Drake" an unforgettable film. Sensitively portrayed by the astounding Imelda Staunton. IP: Logged |

I've been nursing a wicked cold for a week now and I always find the best cure for bedridden boredom is a good long movie...this week I've watched The Two Towers and The Return of the King. I've always found comfort in Tolkien whether on the page or screen. I also watched a movie called "Black Cat, White Cat", loaned to me by a Hungarian friend. It's a gipsy mafia romantic comedy....I think. Two weddings, two old men on ice, great music, a pig eating a car....quite humorous. IP: Logged |

At the theater we just saw "Sideways." It's highly acclaimed but I think my husband liked it a bit more than I did. It's worth seeing but I'm wondering if it isn't a tad bit overrated. (Along the lines of "American movies are usually so intellectually flacid that when there finally is a clever one people go wild") On DVD, aside from watching the first series BK DVD I got for Christmas, we also have been watching Volume II of the Looney Tunes Golden Collection. We were going to see the "original" Godzilla movie (in Japanese and without Raymond Burr's part tagged on) but we missed the showing! We have one more chance. I'm curious about that for some reason. Is there anything on right now worth seeing? We'll probably pass on "The Aviator" and probably "A Very Long Engagement". Any recommendations? IP: Logged |

Arabella, how is Shaun of the Dead? I'm not a horror buff myself, but I have a friend who is and I'm thinking of sending it to her as a gift. (But only if it is good.) Is it funny? IP: Logged |

Joy I'm with you on "Sideways" could never feel the good friendship the two main characters were supposed to have and it was very preachy about wine> I did see "Kinsey" laast week, a film I would never have thought of going to, but I like Liam Neeson and trust him to be in a good movie. I thought it was excellent and the material presented in an honest and interesting way. A preview that evening was for a film called "Millions" looked very Irish to me and I think I saw Assumpta's husband Leo as the boy's father. Marilyn IP: Logged |

Over the weekend, BBCAmerica had a "Fawlty Towers" marathon so I watched a lot of that until my silly meter went ballistic. Also, saw the first episode of "Canterbury Tales" on the same channel and will probably continue on with it as I notice "Leo" will be on at least 1 episode. Did spend a lot of time Sunday on the History channel when I wasn't reading. Still watch BallyK and today's episode was one of my favorites, "I Know When I'm Not Wanted". IP: Logged |

Wow. My browser (Mozilla!) crashed in the middle of a post. Haven't had that happen in a long time. Maybe it knew I was going on for too long! ;-) Joy: I'd love to hear what you think of the original "Godzilla." I've got the Raymond Burr version on DVD. Big sigh. I'm a fan of old horror and monster movies. Arabella: I love "Gosford Park." Here's a bit of "six degrees" BallyK trivia: Adrian Scarborough, who plays the snarky valet Bates, was in a couple of radio programs with ST. Barb: We got to meet Andrew Sachs (Manuel) a few months ago at a PBS event. He had some great stories to tell about "Fawlty Towers." I'm picking my way through the second season of "Quantum Leap." Brings back lots of old memories. And for everyone in the UK, "The A-Z of Quantum Leap" was NOT my fault! :hangs head in shame: IP: Logged |

About "Sideways". I didn't think much of it either, found the supposedly "sensitive" fellow a pedantic, self-absorbed loser. When he stole the $ from his mother, he lost me. But when I was summing it up for my son, he thought he'd like it. Maybe it's a guy's film. I just got back from "Kinsey" and was impressed. Better than I'd expected. I was in college when his first book came out, and it did change history. IP: Logged |

Yes Shaun of the Dead is a comedy from start to finish but the people who wrote and directed in (edgar Wright and Simon Pegg who also did Spaced and many other things) are into their horror and sci fi so the film is packed with references to other films(many of which passed me by)most of the people I know whether they like horror or not absolutely loved it. My favourite comedy moment is when they are trying to beat to death the zombie pub landlord(of their local pub where they try to take refuge) with pool cues in time to don't stop me now by Queen. Its hilarious. (in my opinion!) IP: Logged |

I have been really enjoying "Hope & Glory." Additionally, I just watched the new "Battlestar Gallactica" and LOVED it! I pretty much always catch "I Spy" which shows here once a week and am still enjoying the original CSI. A show that has caught me completely off guard with how much I like it is Hugh Laurie's show "House." IP: Logged |

quote: I saw The Life Aquatic with Steve Zisou, a Wes Anderson film with Bill Murray. I really liked it. The film is just absurd...jaguar sharks, pirates, three legged dogs, colourful faux fish, red caps, and David Bowie in Portuguese. I recommend it with the caveat that people who go to see it either love it or absolutely hate it. I'm actually curious about A Very Long Engagement. I really like Jean Pierre Jeunet and Audrey Tatou is enchanting. It looks really violent though. IP: Logged |

Life Aquatic is very much like Royal Tenenbaums. I don't know if I loved it, but I'm really glad I saw it. It made me as sad as it made me happy. If you like quirky, see it right away. It's weird and wonderful. IP: Logged |

I'd forgotten about Life Aquatic since it got such so-so reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. I hesitated, then forgot it was playing. I liked Rushmore and really like The Royal Tannenbaums so maybe I will like this too. IP: Logged |

i watched the royal tenebaums on rental and I was enthralled by the first half as it was so quirky and wonderful at first then about halfway through I felt it just lost it and my brain switched off! Probably because I was tired I can't remember it was at least a year ago. IP: Logged |

I didn't like the Tenenbaums at all, so will skip the aquatic life. I did see "A Very Long Engagement" and was quite taken with it. The war scenes are gory and violent, but the story is lovely and the characters endearing. IP: Logged |

On our list of movies to see, "The Aviator" is next. Has anyone seen it, do you think we'll like it? We watched "The Mummy Returns" on dvd this weekend. Enjoyed it but we've sworn off edged weapon films for a bit! IP: Logged |

I hope you enjoy Aviator, Brian and Laura. Friends of mine saw it and said it was good. I just have a problem with Leo. I don't understand the fuss about his acting, and I refuse to pay to watch a man whose hips are narrower than my own. Shallow of me, I know, but there it is. IP: Logged |

If I did that, Cathy, that would leave...let's see...Richard Griffiths? Good actor, but that narrows the field quite a bit. Uh, pun not intended. IP: Logged |

The movie we went to see yesterday contained nudity, violence, and David Hasselhoff. Yes, it was the Spongebob Squarepants movie, or "The Spong" as it said on the ticket. All together now: "Who lives in a pineapple under the sea..." IP: Logged |

Marcie. I loved Finding Neverland as well. I saw it last Sunday and wow. I was really stupid though and put Mascara on before I went in the cinema. Really really bad idea lol. I definetly recommend it as well. The little boy that played Peter was a fantastic little actor. He made me cry just watching him lol. IP: Logged |

Watching BBCAmerica and heard a familiar voice. It was Assumpta, I recognized the voice before I recognized the face. The show is called The Night Detective. I have never seen it before, so I don't know if it's any good. I believe she is a lawyer in this show. She is wearing her hair very long and straight and dressed in very conservative suits, so different from Ballyk. But, the look suits her, she looks great. IP: Logged |

Hi- well since we've been suffering through a nasty bit of Pittsburgh weather I've been parked in front of the ol' 3-in-1 TV a lot lately(except today- there's a strange yellow orb in the sky giving off this delightful light and warmth, and the temperature has hit a balmy 50-something. What's it called- oh yeah, the sun. We only get it about 60 days a year...But wait, more rain and plunging temperatures tomorrow so...) I've been watching GRAFTERS (bit by bit) with ST, and The Office (the latter being unbelievably funny while making you cringe). I also got the first five seasons of Coupling but haven't started it yet. Figure this will get me to April when it will still be raining but at least a bit warmer. -Jo IP: Logged |
