Again? Do they play it on TV every year where you're at, or do you have it? I've never seen it but would love to.

I saw Flint Street Nativity for the first time last week. It's brilliant! So funny! I read a review somewhere that said the movie would bring back childhood memories of nativity plays because of the way the kids behave, and I thought, yeah, right, it's probably going to be funny, but it's played by adults, so there's no way this is going to be authentic re the childhood memories/behaviour. I was so wrong! You really forget that the actors are adults, and especially at the moment (at the latest) when the flute music (?) starts between the acts, I felt like I was 8 years old again and at the peak of my acting career.

The winning contestant on last night's TV quiz show "Jeopardy" was named Sean Dillon. He didn't look like him, though!

inspired by postings here, last night i watched "truly, madly, deeply." the norwegian didn't care for it, but he missed the best part; he was bothered by the keening of Juliet whatshername when she was sobbing in the psychiatrist's office, so he went upstairs to continue reading the massive biography of andrew mellon that he bought.

i watched the whole thing. best scene: all the ghosts watching movies in the bedroom, lit by the glow of the TV.

it was a pretty good flick. i assume her husband came back in order to help her get over his death, and he did it in a very sweet way--reaffirming his love, but reaffirming his faults, too.

and you gotta like that floppy-haired magician character. what a sweetie.

thanks for the recommendation.

Inspired (although I'm not sure that's the proper word) by Brian's posting of that Youtube link with the WKRP video, I've spent far too much time watching strange videos on that website. And I do mean strange.

What I'll be watching tonight is one of my favorite movies - Waterloo Bridge. It stars Vivien Leigh & Robert Taylor...now I can hear you youngsters say Vivien who & Robert who. It came out shortly after Gone With the Wind and I've read it was Ms. Leigh's favorite role. Give it a view if possible and bring along pleanty of tissues.

Maeve -- I love that film too. Also That Hamilton Woman from 1941(?) with Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier. I read once that this was apparently Winston Churchill's favourite film at one point.
I love VL's work. Do enjoy watching it!

"Waterloo Bridge" is unquestionably a great film but lets not fail to mention my own favourite "Brief Encounter".

Yes. That is great too. I was fortunate to find Celia Johnson's biography a couple of years ago. It is also very interesting to read about the making of the film -- there is much to find on the internet regarding the trains, and the set, for example. In addition, I find the Rachmaninoff score used to best advantage -- don't you agree, Aesop?

I certainly do agree. Whenever I think of "Brief Encounter" I can hear the music.

Celia Johnson is also in "The Holly and the Ivy" which is a Christmas movie that I'm sure you would enjoy.

Thanks Aesop. I haven't seen "The Holly and the Ivy" so I will go shopping at my favourite old movie store.
She had such a rich and distinctive speaking voice.
A particularly memorable segment of "Brief Encounter" was when the characters had just parted for the last time and that nosy lady kept talking on and on incessantly on the train...
... speaking of railway stations, Aesop, do you enjoy "Mrs. Miniver" with Greer Garson? Every time I see that film I want to go and plant roses everywhere!

We saw "The Holiday" as well, Assumpta. I'm telling everyone I meet to go see it (Well, not everyone, didn't get to mention it to the woman at the grocery check out but I'll try to catch her later in the week!), wouldn't mind at all seeing it again myself.

Irish, I wasn't impressed with the vicar at first, but she tends to grow on you. One of the funniest episodes I've seen is when she falls in love with the bald-headed guy's brother (I think - sorry, can't remember their names any more). Their affair is hilarious.

Hi, everyone. Long time, no post. I'm back for a week or so and started going through the posts. I've missed seeing what people have to say.

Anyway, I watched Flint Street Nativity last night with my family. It is our new tradition, which began last year. It really is funny. Last month, I lent it to a friend (who should be arriving in Manchester any minute now, actually) who said she watched it about ten times and was crying after only the second viewing. She loved it.

As far as The Vicar of Dibley, it's very good. It doesn't quite have the emotional depth of BallyK or the drama, but it's a cute sit-com. The episode that someone mentioned--where Gerry falls in love with Simon--is fantastic. Even my mom laughed, and love and sex are not anything she laughs at. So skip ahead to those if you get bogged down.

it's great to have you back, veggie.

we watched all the vicaar of dibley episdoes that were on the series 1DVD, and mailed it back to netflix. now i see that the Norwegian has quietly removed all the other vicar of dibley DVDs from our netflix queue.

so i'll have to wait until he goes ice-fishing.

While at my sister's in Texas, we watched a DVD about a truly odd man and his obsession with grizzly bears, called "Project Grizzly." There was a certain twisted enjoyment in watching it, but I can't really recommend it.

Here is a link to the Wikpedia entry about the film if you want to look at it.

P.S. Yes, Veggie, glad to see you back here.

We just watched H2O: The Last Prime Minister. On dvd, which was good because it meant we could pause it every now and then and check that we actually understood all the machinations, and their impact on the big picture. I certainly didn't foresee the ending. Programmes about politics always remind me that I'm just not smart enough to ever even attempt to be devious.

I watched over the holidays a programme on Kumano, a World Heritage site in western Japan. Kumano is an ancient cedar forest located in a very remote mountain area. There was also a programme last night on the hot spring resorts of Japan from Hokkaido to Okinawa. Most of the hot springs are located inland on the mountainous backbone of Japan. Hot spring resorts are a popular destination for Japanese to relax and party. It was interesting to discover that some of the hot spring resorts maintain outdoor communal hot spring pools for villagers to use for cooking.

My husband and I sat down to start watching the last season of Six Feet Under last night, but he didn't want to deal with something so dark and intense. So we clicked it off before it started. Then he said, "I don't think I've ever seen the first episode of Ballykissangel. Do you still have it?" So I got to watch that. It was fun. I haven't seen any BallyK in a very long time. My husband remarked how young ST looked. Heh. And he kept asking, "What's in the box?! They never said! What's in it?"

Been watching Hamish Macbeth. I've liked it, though I wish I could pull up subtitles to help me understand the brogue. I also wish they would hurry up and get the third season on DVD. Why do they take so long putting these things on DVD sometimes? Demand, money, politics, priorities, red tape, I guess.

in my sleep addled not-enough-coffeed state i thought the topic here was "what are you wearing?" which seemed, well, a bit risque. (even though i am wearing nothing more sultry than a wool sweater, flannel-lined jeans and thick socks.)

we watched the movie "the devil wears prada" the other night. i hated the book. hated it. hated it with a deep passion. but we rented the movie because we had read that meryl streep was particularly brilliant in it.

she was good. but the movie was way too much like the book, which, as i might have mentioned already, i truly hated.
