He said he didn't know, but that people in other parts of the world are much more heavily exposed to American culture through movies and TV than Americans are exposed to other countries' cultures. If I have remembered this incorrectly, I hope Thea will correct me, or amplify the response. IP: Logged |

Yes, that is exactly what he said. He seemed not to think it as remarkable as we do! IP: Logged |

I watched an Inspector Morse rerun the other night, "Ghost in the Machine." This is the one in which Morse delivers himself of the opinion that spelling words like "apologize" as "apologise" -- that is, with the -ise ending rather than -ize -- is illiterate, and cites the OED as his authority. Heh heh! I notice that most of the British magazines, papers etc. that I see prefer the -ise ending; that must have galled Morse. IP: Logged |

While taking classes in London, my son went to Dublin for a long weekend, and asked me to order from Netflix 3 favorite Irish films - Michael Collins, The Boxer, and In the Name of the Father. So I have been immersed in the violent world of Ireland's history. He goes back to Spain on Monday, and I can get things that might be a change from the news. IP: Logged |

i've not seen "the boxer," but those other two are good movies. hard to watch, though. i do not enjoy watching violence.

Have you seen "The Field" (1991) with the great Irish actor Richard Harris? There's also "Da" with Martin Sheen. aesop

it's MY field! i can still hear richard harris proclaiming that with indignation and fury. i love that movie. all that hauling of the seaweed to build up the dirt...and then it all goes horribly wrong. when i was on the aran islands a few years ago we watched the film "man of aran," an old black-and-white documentary about life on the island. and damned if they weren't hauling the seaweed and the sand, layering it, to make soil. my husband said, "man, these people are so poor they don't even have dirt!" i don't remember seeing something called "da." does martin sheen try to adopt an irish brogue?

Sorry, I don't wish to be disagreeable but it's "THE FIELD" although it may have been shown using a different title. BTW: I've also seen "man of arran" a number of years ago. aesop

huh? i was quoting richard harris. he kept proclaiming, "it's MY Field!" with great passion, when the american was trying to take his land away. the title of the movie is, indeed, "the field."

My daughter and I saw The Devil Wears Prada. Having FINALLY been to Paris, we had such funs watching the PAris scenes and nudging each other: "We saw that! We were there!) Does anyone know of a movie called "Truly, Madly Deeply"? It's with Alan Rickman, and a friend told me she loves it. I don't know it at all, but I love him. IP: Logged |

As I recall, that was a very good movie. I should get it again from Netflix. IP: Logged |

Like Irishgirl, I have not seen "The Boxer," but I saw the other two. Going back a ways, I recommend "Odd Man Out" (1947) with James Mason, Robert Newton, et al. if you can find it. All of these are very powerful. IP: Logged |

My friend who told me she loves Madly Truly Deeply surprised me by ordering it through Amazon and having it delivered to me! Haven't had time to watch it yet, but i'm loking forward to it. I was just watching Father Ted, and who did I see but Padraig! I knew about P & A in A Christmassy Ted (that's why I bought the DVDs, to tell the truth), but this was a nice surprise. IP: Logged |

I was watching "Cold Feet" last night. James Nesbitt is one of the lead characters in a "Friends" type series. The pilot is Soooo funny. Here I am by myself laughing hysterically at some of JN's antics. It is really, really funny. If you're interested, I got it from Netflix. IP: Logged |

I just watched my first episode of "House" last night. I've read several things about it on here, and my sister is always telling me that I should watch it. It was a good show, but very psychadelic last night (House's hallucinations). It was good, but I think I'll have to watch several more before I can really tell if it's up to BallyK-obsession level! On another note, I watched Woody Allen's Match Point over the weekend. It was the first time I'd seen Rupert Penry-Jones in anything (to my knowledge). Small part, but at least now I know who he is. (James Nesbitt is in this as well.) IP: Logged |

I also really like "Dead Again", Kenneth Brannagh & Emma Thompson. Though I must say, he plays one part of the dual role better than the other. Don't want to say which part, in case that would spoil it for someone who hasn't seen it. [This message has been edited by Jen (edited 23-08-2006).] IP: Logged |

Quite a few episodes of Goodnight Sweetheart -- the Dervla years were on here yesterday. I love Alan Rickman's voice -- like a really rich, smooth chocolate sound. (Hope you know what I mean) ![]() [This message has been edited by rustynoni (edited 28-08-2006).] IP: Logged |

I've been watching, thanks to Netflix, a Masterpiece Theater series that I somehow missed, called "The Duchess of Duke Street". Either I was in some kind of fog back in the 70's, or our PBS station didn't show it. I have seen almost all of the first series, and will go through it right to the end. Lots of good acting and good story lines. IP: Logged |

Our local library has the first series and I enjoyed it as well. It is very good. The second series is now available at Amazon and it sounds good.

I'm watching The Duchess of Duke Street, too, for the first time. I've just started the second series, thanks to NetFlix. I knew Gemma Jones was a good character actress (Sense and Sensibility), but I had never seen her in a leading role before. I'm also still wading through the All Creatures, Great and Small series. Have grown quite attached to James, Seigfried (sp?) and Tristan, although it was a shock when they changed actresses for Mrs. Herriot mid-stream. And I'm really growing tired of watching men thrust their arms up cows' backsides. IP: Logged |

you funny, jan. i once followed a farm veterinarian around for the day. it was fascinating! he gave a young couple advice on how to raise rabbits; he castrated calves; he did surgery on a cow right there in the barn. and yes, the long elbow-length plastic gloves came in handy for him that day..... I'm watching Series 4 (finally!!). I just received the DVDs in the mail yesterday. Even with everything going on right now, I managed to watch five episodes last night (plus 2 episodes of Series 2 with my sister). I was up until 4:00 this morning watching, but I was so hooked that I couldn't go to bed. I'm dragging today but I'm not complaining. Anything for a BallyK fix! I wasn't sure if I'd want to watch the non-P&A series, but now I'm wondering why I waited. There is not thet same chemistry with anyone yet, but the others actors and storylines are definitely worth watching. IP: Logged |

quote: What's amazing to me, Irish, is the actors in All Creatures Great and Small don't wear gloves. They wash their hands in a bucket of soap and water and then go for it. I wonder if they knew the requirements of the roles before they accepted them. Guess if you're a hungry actor, you'll do anything. IP: Logged |

I've been trying to get Series 4 through our inter-library loan, but somehow it never shows up (a few months of trying). So, I finally bit the bullet and bought it. I, too, am wondering if I will become as attached to the later series but I guess only time will tell. I'll need time to decide if Assumpta's death is the "jumping the shark" moment of the entire BallyK run. IP: Logged |

Last night I watched a movie called "The Boys & girl from County Clare" and lo and behold two characters who had guest spots on Ballyk were in it - the fellow who played Edna and the lady who played Quigley's housekeeper. I didn't recognize "Edna" at first as he has changed so much but the voice was so familiar. He played Michael in the Clare band and was playing a small drum. IP: Logged |

I agree with you Thistle - Stephen Tompkinson is not a Greek God type but he is a great actor and I would rather watch him any day. I even listened to ST read "Millions" even though it's a children's book. Actually I ended up enjoying the story too. Good luck at the book store. What a great place to be.
