Turns out that Pauline McLynn was in Ballykea. I can't place her, maybe given the makeup job they do on her in Father Ted. I was trying to figure out who she played...I have to go back and check, but by any chance, was she Fionnula, Padraig's ex-wife?

Padraig's ex-wife was played by Frances Tomelty, who was also Sting's first wife.

Lucky you, Vicki- I'd call that a good day!

Last night I watched "A Love Divided" which has several BK alum in it, including Peter Caffrey as a publican, Tony Doyle as the village RC priest, and I swear I spotted Frankie McCafferty in a crowd scene, possibly as a reporter. A really terrific movie, I thought. The scenery was beautiful, the acting was terrific and the story was compelling. I'm glad it's now in my archives!

Here are a couple of news items on Ballyk stars.

1. ITV advertised the new Miss Marple last night as coming soon. It will star Stephen Tompkinson as Inspector Slack.
http://www.geraldinemcewan.com/MissMarple.html

2. Channel 4 - The Richard and Judy Show showed a brief excerpt from The School for Seduction in which Dervla Kirwan stars.

3. The Irish Examiner did an article on Peter Hanly last Friday. I don't have a link but here are the first three paragraphs.

" Never underestimate the power of television. Over the years, Peter Hanly has developed a reputation as one of Ireland's best stage actors. Nevertheless, the vast majority of people still know him as the nerdy Garda Ambrose from the series, Ballykissangel.
As it happens, after 4 seasons as Ambrose, Hanly took it upon himself to get out of Ballykissangel. He had reached a point where he realised he was beginning to repeat himself in the role and it became rather stale for him. He ruefully suggests that even though he's now earning less money on stage, the quality of the roles he's playing bring real satisfaction.
The latest of these is that of Gabe, in Guna Nua's version of Pulitzer prize winning American playwright Donald Marguiles' comedy Dinner with Friends".

Dinner with Friends is at Andrew's Lane Theatre, Dublin until the end of December.

Techiechick shared this quote:

A quote from the CNN.com review of "Alexander":

Farrell's Alexander looks like a Babylonian hooker after a busy Saturday night. The bad dye job also greatly hinders this talented actor from ever achieving the enormous authority needed to carry off this gigantic role.

Has anybody seen Alexander the Great? I have to admit that it isn't a good sign that I want to laugh when I see pictures of Colin Farrell as Alexander with his dyed blond tousled hair. I want to laugh and then I want to feel sorry for Farrell because surely this is just a case of miscasting? The styling of this Alexander the Great makes him look more like a California surfer dude than a warrior. I think there are few people that could pull off a hairdo like that and still be taken seriously.

The Rotten Tomatoes site scored Alexander as "rotten". (One of the rottenest I've ever seen--9% out of 100!): http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/alexander/

Thanks for the heads-up about the new Miss Marple, and Stephen Tomkinson's involvement, Lindsey! Looks like it will be aired in April on Mystery, and hopefully my local PBS station will carry it! I certainly will tape it if they do. Actually I have all of the Joan Hickson Miss Marple episodes on tape, too. It will be interesting to juxtapose them. I've always loved Agatha Christie- she helped feed the Anglophile habit I had as a child.

I always appreciate any news on ST. I don't get much here!

Also thanks for the update on Hanly. I remember other postings on the forum asking why he left. We remembered why Peter Caffrey left but couldn't remember exactly why Hanly left. Someone thought it was because he didn't think the show would succeed after ST and DK left.

BTW, I watched "The Nephew" last night, which has a few BK alum- Birdy Sweeney and Niall Tiobin, and the actor who played Kathleen's nephew (the one behind Angel FM) in "Fallen Angel". He played a boy named Peter in "The Nephew," I really enjoyed this film!

I was out at the flagship store for Half Price Books this afternoon and ran across a copy of The Sittaford Mystery. This was a BBC dramatization of the Agatha Christie novel done in 1990. ST plays Charles Enderby, a journalist investigating the mystery.

sorrect me if I'm wrong.

Jo: If I run across another copy I'll let you know. (I have to admit that I konked out while listening yesterday afternoon. The horrors! I've been dealing with a sinus infection and not sleeping.)

AB: You're absolutely right! Ding! Ding! That was indeed Pauline McLynn. My husband did a double-take when he saw that epsiode.

Okay, where did you see the Miss Marple trailers? I suppose they're only on TV in the UK, or are they on the Internet somewhere? I think Geraldine McEwan will make a wonderful Miss Marple.

'Tis the season, alright- I have bronchitis that just won't go away. Good for doctors, I guess.

A few observations on the last couple of posts. Hope everyone feels better, that's the first one.

Secondly, glad you have recordings of BK to get you through a little nesting- glad you can rest, too!

I'm actually on jury duty today- haven't been picked yet. Do you believe I am the only one who brought a portable DVD player? Guess what I'm watching... Some people didn't even bring books- good grief. So much sitting around and waiting- I'd go crazy without something to distract me. (I wonder what the jury selection process is like in the UK and Ireland...)

For those of you interested in the new Mystery series- I went out to their website (a link from PBS.org) and was able to sign up for a newsletter- so that should keep me posted on the release of the series here in the US. Just a suggestion.

Lastly, you all know I have a particular fondness for ST and I know some of you find his picture on the poster 'yummy' (I think that's the world that was used in an archival post!!!) but I don't know- it doesn't send me. I guess I like the more, oh what's the word, boyish looks of Peter Clifford.

No, this is actually the last thing- I bought a copy of Chancer on DVD. ST plays a (I hope) regularly occurring character. Anyone seen it?

- Jo, who is spending her children's inheritance on DVDs and VHS featuring certain actors....

yes Unfortunately the miss marple trailers were here in the uk! sorry. Geraldine Mcewan has terrified me ever since the magdalen sisters so I don't know how I feel about that.
We also have Joanna Lumley, Tim McInnery ( blackadder, notting hill etc) Simon Callow ( an absolute saint in my eyes, four weddings a room with a view etc.) Tara Fitzgerald ( brassed off, sirens) and loads of others. I don't like agatha christie and I'm excited.
My flu is now better but I'm still battling the tail end of a chest infection. thanks for the well wishes!

BBC 7 has a Christmas present for Stephen Tompkinson fans: They'll run "The Sittaford Mystery" during Christmas week. He'll show up starting the second episode and takes a major role as a journalist investigating the murder. (Yep, this is the same program I found on tape last week. Go figure.) It's scheduled to air at 1:30 and 8:30 pm BST (7:30 am and 2:30 pm CST) Monday - Friday.<p>

And then starting on Thursday the 30th, it's the return of Shelley, starring ST as the laconic layabout. It's scheduled to air at 2:00 and 9:00 BST (8:00 am and 3:00 pm CST). My schedule only goes through the 31st, but it looks like it will air on Thursdays. I've heard parts 3-6 of this show, and it is hilarious. It's written by Peter Tilbury, who wrote Chef!

These programs should be avaliable the day after airing on Listen Again.

Oh, gosh. My BBC7 newsletter just arrived in my inbox, and it had the following:

Alan Bennett's dramatisation of Kenneth Grahame's classic, The Wind in the Willows (Thursday - Friday at 10am and 1am), sees an all star cast re-create the adventures of Mole, Ratty, Badger and the infamous Toad.

Richard Briers is Rat, Adrian Scarborough is Mole, Derek Waring is Badger, and Nickolas Grace is Toad. Look out for Lesley Philips and Stephen Tompkinson in David Blount's production.

Thanks to Google, I found out that Stephen Tompkinson plays Weasle Norman. (For those interested, Adrian Scarborough was also in Big Town All Stars. And it also has Richard Briers. No BallyK connection, but he's good!)

Oops! One more from the BBC7 newsletter:

An arsonist's attack on a stables unleashes a thirst for revenge by its victim in Horses (Monday - Friday at 1pm and 8pm).

When a fire claims the lives of some beloved horses, it's a race against time for the local doctor, policeman and vet to prevent the bereaved from avenging their deaths.

Does anyone know if "Binka" airs on any US station other than BBC America, like PBS for instance? I know we get other shows, like Boombah, Teletubbies, and the Wiggles on public television. Of course, unlike Laura and Brian, who I am sure are closet children's shows watchers (say that three times fast), I only watch those shows because I have to mind my granddaughter a couple of days each week. Uh... yeah ... that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

One more James Nesbitt sighting: He'll be starring in one of the new adaptations of "The Canterbury Tales." This one is "The Miller's Tale." Here's the link:

Also, series 2 of "Murphy's Law" starts January 31.

And don't forget ST stars in "Shelley" on BBC7. The first episode is on Thursday.

Does anyone out there watch the series, "Foyles War"? It stars Michael Kitchen. I just saw the first two episodes at my friend's house yesterday. She received the whole series as a gift. It is set in Hastings, on the south coast of England, during WWII. The acting, cinematography, and stories are absolutely stunning. I haven't seen a Ballk alum yet, but I'm sure that sooner or later one will appear.

I saw Colin Farrell on Ellen DeGeneres this morning. This is the first time I had seen him in interview. I must say I was underwhelmed. I guess he is good looking (although not my type) but he is in no danger of anyone accusing him of having a fine mind.

He also wasn't that good of a sport. Ellen's guests often are asked to do stupid things--usually dance. (Justin Timberlake came out dressed like a gingerbread man on one of Ellen's holiday shows. I am definitely not a fan of Justin's but I had to give him credit for being game, funny, and dancing energetically. Not easy to do while in a gingerbread man suit.) All Colin had to do was teach three grinning girls how to line dance and he complained all the way through it, wanting to stop as soon as he could. Maybe he was just embarrassed but it came across that he just felt that was too silly for him, that he was above that.

The show dealt well with his habit of swearing, though, making it into a joke. Everytime he swore he promised to donate $100 to charity. I think it was up to $1000 by the time his bit was over. (Don't think he does that on purpose, or to offend, but nevertheless it isn't terribly endearing.)

Oh well, maybe he is this great guy who just has a PR problem. My impression wasn't good but maybe it was a bad day for him.

Yes, I've seen both series, and hope that there's a third - it's excellent. I want to know what happens to the characters! Michael Kitchen is such a wonderfully understated actor, very enjoyable to watch. Don't remember any BallyK faces, but there may have been one or two. They'd certainly be at home.

I saw that as well, Flossie. Everyone keeps saying what a nice guy he is but whenever I've seen him I don't feel the love. It's almost as though the interviewers are trying to make excuses for him. "Yes, he curses constantly, smokes and drinks incessantly, wasn't with the mother of his child when she was giving birth, but, heck, he's just misunderstood." I don't even think he's that good-looking. Sexy eminates from within, and I'm not sure what exactly his "within" is.
