BBC7 Has just started to air Big Town All Stars again! You can pick up last Thursday's show here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbc7/listenagain/tuesday/ And the next episode airs Tuesday a 1 and 9 pm (BST) and will be available on Listen Again on Wednesday. I can't recommend this show enough. ST plays Kenny, the leader of a struggling a capella group. The writing is crisp, and the performances are excellent. I would rate this PG-13 for some adult language. There's a lot of talk about relationships, but the talk is not as frank as say, "Coupling." Some of you may recognize some of the other voice talent. This is more of an alumni question than alumni news but I didn't know where else to ask it. I just saw the episode today where Ambrose died. I'm curious, was his character killed off just for plot purposes (to clear the way for Sean) or did Peter Henly want to leave for other projects? (I'm not sure where Braveheart happened in the chronology although it occurs to me that might have been a reason for PH to leave.) IP: Logged |

Peter Hanly was in Braveheart??! Which character was he? IP: Logged |

Braveheart was before BallyK. He played the young Edward, Prince of Wales. And he did look like a kid! IP: Logged |

Joy, I was wondering the same thing- not just about Ambrose's character but also about Padraig O'Kelly. I had read that after series 5, when they brought back Kieran P, there was a general housecleaning of characters to give him the opportunity he wanted to inject new life in the show. I guess by then the viewership had 'dwindled' to around 7 million viewers. Sounds pretty respectable to me, but when compared to the 15 million or so that the first three series drew, perhaps it isn't so impressive. But Ambrose and Padraig were dropped in the middle of series 4, and I wondered what the impetus was. So if any of you insiders know, share it with us, won't you? - Jo IP: Logged |

I remember in the past this was discussed and Becky did provide the answer re. Peter Caffrey. As I recall, he left due to a serious illness. For some reason, I'm thinking it was something serious having to do with his throat, but that's just what I remember, not what I know as fact. By the same token, I believe he went on to other projects afterwards, so maybe once he was out, he was just out. Peter Hanly: I don't remember what it was. IP: Logged |

Ah, you've jogged my memory, Morris- I remember now that he had throat cancer. He mentioned it during an interview. Thanks- a piece of the puzzle falls in place. I am sure his concern about his own health added to the absolute authenticity with which he played his declining character in "Rock Bottom." How intelligent of the writers to tap into that, and the natural concern and caring that the other actors would have had with the man. Brilliant. I think there's a happy ending here- he's still acting? - Jo IP: Logged |

From what I can remember I read and article saying Peter Hanly didn't want to carry on after Dervla and Stephen left because he didn't think it would work without them. I did read this article about 6yrs ago though and I was in a busy shopping centre trying to read it without a shop assistant catching me so I may have misread it. IP: Logged |

I'd love to listen to Big Town All Stars featuring ST on BBC 7. I've never done this before. When it says that the show is on Tuesday at 2 p.m. and 9 p.m., I assume that's the local time in London? Any tips for listening in, and recording???? I'd appreciate it! - Jo (stateside, obviously). IP: Logged |

It's very easy to listen in. In fact, you can still get Tuesday's episode online. Go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbc7/ to start. Click on Listen Live to listen via RealPlayer or Windows Media. Click on the Listen Again schedule and select Tuesday to hear the previous episode. Listen Again is only via Real Audio. While it helps to have broadband, it isn't absolutely necessary. And yes, the times are in the UK. If you're in the eastern time zone, subtract 5 hours. 6 for central, and so on. IP: Logged |

That's grand, Julie, thanks! Now all I need is Real Audio. I have other players, but not that one. I'll get it- I'm determined! - Jo IP: Logged |

What, me form habits related to British or Irish shows??!! Heaven forbid! ;-] Speaking of which.... James Nesbitt (Leo McGarvey, as you all know, and Fionn in Waking Ned Devine) was one of the stars in a British show called "Cold Feet." Sorry if this has been covered before but how is it? Has anyone seen it? The pilot and first series is on DVD "for mature audiences." The write-up calls it the UK's answer to "Friends" which I for one don't take as a strong endorsement. But then the write-ups in these catalogs are always ridiculously off the mark. Any recommendations? - Jo IP: Logged |

I haven't seen that show. I'm waiting for BBCA to air the next series of "Murphy's Law." I really liked that show. Ah, yes. Once you've discovered BBC7, Radio 4 won't be far behind. They just aired the new "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" episodes. Joy! IP: Logged |

I watched Cold Feet Jo and I loved it. It faded out towards the end of the last series but it could be a real tearjerker in parts. James Nesbitt was fabulous in it as Adam. His on-again off-again girlfriend was Rachel played by Helen Baxendale (who was Ross’s English wife, Emily, in Friends). Cold Feet isn’t a sit-com like Friends and is much more character orientated. It deals with serious issues as well as being funny. One of the best dramas in recent years, for sure. In case you’ve all missed the dulcet tones of Father Mac, then Niall Toibín is reading from Don Quixote on Monday night on RTE Radio 1 at 11.25pm Irish time (GMT). IP: Logged |

Jeez, what is it about TV shows killing off female leads when they need to be taken out of the plot??? If I were paranoid I'd start worrying about misogyny. Wait a minute... - Jo IP: Logged |

I was gutted over Rachel too, Helena. I simply could not believe it had happened. Bam! Just like that, she was dead. After everything we’d seen over the five years I thought it was a horrible thing to do. It’s awfully similar to Assumpta’s demise but everyone knew that was going to happen. I didn’t know a thing about Rachel. James Nesbitt played that disbelief so well. I'll never forget his face during that episode. IP: Logged |

Yeah, James Nesbitt did a really really great job. From utter joy after having bought their house to such despair. The scenes in the hospital were really extra-ordinary. James Nesbitt -very lonely- staring into space as the rest of them had nodded off in each others arms... His face when they lost Rachel. And as he nodded "no" to the others to tell them she was gone, I found myself doing the very same. What a tragedy, at least Assumpta didn't leave behind a baby that needed her. I had no clue Assumpta was going to die and I had no idea Rachel was either. Right before the episode of Cold Feet though, they said so in their introductory "story". Very silly thing to do. That was the a horrible death as well in Cold Feet. To make matters worse it happened the week my Aunt died. Poor James Nesbit doesn't have much luck with wives in TV lol. [This message has been edited by Vicky (edited 17-11-2004).] IP: Logged |

Jo, did you get to listen to the Big Town All Stars? IP: Logged |

Julie, I did not, for a few reasons. First I've been doing a fair amount of business travel lately and haven't been in the right place at the right time. Second I don't have Real Audio on my PC at home and need to install it in such a way that it doesn't interfere with all the fancy audio stuff my husband already has on it for his music composing, etc, etc. I have threatened him several times with dire consequences if he doesn't get it installed! I need to contact you about the tapes you have... still on my mind, so expect to hear from me. Hope there's still an offer to trade!!! While I was in Philadelphia this week I had CNN on in my hotel room and I heard a voice-over on a Samsonite commercial that sounded a lot like Stephen Tompkinson. I think someone else mentioned this- I'd be willing to bet it was him. Incidently that commercial is a bit ridiculous- selling the luggage because it is so easy to maneuver, but showing a woman in spike heels walking all over an aiport and kingdom come... As a veteran business traveler I can only imagine how her feet felt after that trip- Samsonite or no! - Jo- who wore boots on this last trip. IP: Logged |

Yeah, get in touch with me, Jo. Hee, hee! I know just what you mean about traveling in heels. I took a tip from some reporters from NYC during an event that I covered years ago: Wear sneakers, and put your good shoes in a bag. They're there if you need them, but you're a lot more comfortable in sneakers! IP: Logged |

Was home sick in bed yesterday afternoon and watched series three of Father Ted- I noted a couple Ballykea alum and also one alum from Waking Ned Divine... The actress playing Imelda Egan was in one episode- she played a friend of the housekeeper Mrs. Doyle. They went to tea on the mainland and got thrown in jail for disorderly conduct when they argued about who was going to pay the bill. Funny, her character wasn't very different in Father Ted than early renditions of Imelda in BK. She did become more multi-dimensional after Ambrose died, I thought. In another episode Father Ted wins the golden cleric award and one of the priests setting up the media event was played by the same guy who was the lottery man in Waking Ned Divine. Finally, in one episode there's a character called Bishop Brennan and he is played by the actor who was Kathleen Hendley's long lost fiance. Fun to see those familiar faces... and Father Ted is hilarious. I especially love A Christmassy Ted, not just because of the cameo roles by DK and ST. The scene in the lingerie department is classic. - Jo- feeling better after some antibiotics IP: Logged |

Yeah, I love the episode where Bishop Brennan gets his comeuppance. We watched "The Mainland" episode the other day. Chris and I had both been in for eye exams. He told me on the way home that he wished he'd have had one of Fr. Jack's eye charts. Oh, and in "A Christmassy Ted," I think one of the two priests who emceed the awards ceremony was Timmy-Joe. Hope you're feeling better, Jo. As much as I hate being sick, it does force me to slow down a bit. To me, illness is nature's way of saying, "Why don't you watch your favorite movie 12 or so times?" Anybody seen Colin Farrell all over the place these days? I think he's done every talk show in America, promoting his role as Alexander the Great. Somehow, I can't see him in that role. Even less likely is Angelina Jolie as his mother. IP: Logged |

I'm sure that I will never see Colin Farrel in any movies since I'm not a movie goer (and the ones he is in wouldn't be for me) but he must be an excellent actor to have ascended to stardom so quickly. IP: Logged |

Just watched an episode from Father Ted that was hysterical and full of BK alum- "Escape From Victory." It had the actors playing these BK characters: Imelda Egan, Fr. Aidan, Eamon the pig farmer... Turns out that one website for Father Ted lists all the actors that also appeared in BallyKea: Funny they should choose to provide such a list! Turns out that Pauline McLynn was in Ballykea. I can't place her, maybe given the makeup job they do on her in Father Ted. I was trying to figure out who she played...I have to go back and check, but by any chance, was she Fionnula, Padraig's ex-wife? - Jo IP: Logged |
