Well, I was in for far more of a treat than I realized in that particular episode of Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased)! Not only did Dervla Kirwan play the lovely but interestingly blunt (truth serum? I don't think so...) Petra, but Tom Baker played Hopkirk's mentor in death, Mr. Wyvern, and Derek Jacobi played the "villain", Colonel Anger, who worked for the Payne (Pain?) Corporation, doing drug research. Three of my most favorite actors of all time, in one show, I ought to go buy a lottery ticket!!!

So I'm flipping channels last night and wait! there's Niamh! Only it wasn't Niamh, it was Tina Kellegher playing Sharon in "The Snapper" (a film from 1993), along with Colm Meaney (Chief O'Brien of Star Trek fame) and at the very end a cameo by Birdy Sweeney (Eamonn). Cute little film, with lots of hysterical drunken laughter from TK, not at all Niamh-like.

I finally got to see Robert Taylor’s (Father Vincent) film The Hard Word last night. It was so strange seeing him as this horrible, sleazy, double-dealing lawyer. The film itself is okay, the last fifteen minutes felt totally unnecessary and tacked on. Anyway, if you don’t mind bad language, blood, guts, really creapy behaviour… actually, if your type of film is exact opposite of Ballykissangel then don’t miss it. Taylor was good but alas, his character comes to a grisly end which (thankfully) the audience doesn't see.

Yes, Camille, that was a fun episode. Paul and I recognized her right away, but Chris didn't, and we had to give him a couple of clues before he realized who she was. Tom Baker was a regular on that series, and the real reason I started to watch in the first place. And it was fun to watch Derek Jacobi chew scenery. Did you see him in "Gosford Park?" I finally had to go buy that movie.

On a different alumni topic, anyone listen to ST on the Big Toe show? Man, he was GOOD! The first few episodes are still available via the link I gave before. The book he's reading ("Point Blanc") is geared at adolescents, but it's a very well-written book and he gives such a good reading. He sounds like he's having fun with all of the accents. Give a listen if you can.

I miss seeing Tom Baker on TV. I loved him as The Doctor (even if John Pertwee was my favorite) and I haven't seen him in a blessed thing since. He did a Dr. Who retrospective and it was great. I wish I could see him in more things.

Like Dervla and Stephen, he and Lalla Ward were an on screen couple that ended up being an off screen couple.

Oh, I really did enjoy that reading. The production values, too. Apparently that was a BBC production, as the CD reading is by someone else. (Yeah, I went to Amazon hoping to buy a copy. Even to Amazon UK. No luck.)

Radio is a medium that is near and dear to my heart, and it's been fun to listen to him.

Hummm - a new look to the boards today, plus where's Becky gone to? Anyhow, Bosco Hogan is on RTE Radio 1 tomorrow night 8pm (GMT or BST - whatever time we're in at the moment!). He's in a play called Devine written by Vincent Mahon. It's supposed to examine "the delicate and sensitive isues of Irish Republican politics, artistic freedom and sexual identities". You can tune in, as always, on the net at www.rte.ie/radio1 .

Cool! We can edit our posts now but what's this Junior Member business??

Niall Tobin made the front page of our local paper last night.

"Toibin comes home to celebrate birthday

The legendary Niall Toibin took centre stage last night as his 75th birthday was celebrated in his home town.
The star of Borstal Boy, Ballykissangel, Far and Away and numerous other stage performances and radio plays was back on home ground to celebrate ahead of his birthday on November 21.
Mr. Tobin, who was born on Redemption Road and went to school in the North Mon is currently touring the country with his hilarious one-man show"

His home town is Cork and the accompanying picture shows a very fit and well Niall Toibin.

Cheers

I forgot to tell you all that Niall Toibin was on the front page of The Irish Times property section two weeks ago. Don’t be deceived by the price, as €850,000 is a steal. They always put in low guide prices to get your interest and then when it come to the sale, it goes for over €1,000,000. With stamp duty etc, a person would need well in excess of that to be able to buy it. It had a lovely photo of him leaning up against the front door which isn’t in the article unfortunately.

OK, I'm almost totally new to these boards (posted something yesterday), so forgive me if these are repeats, but this kind of thing was something I (as a very nerdy high school girl long ago in the 1970s) loved to do - see where actors showed up. So I have to say that the first time I ever saw James Nesbitt was in "Hear My Song," which you must all rush out and see if you haven't already, and the first time I saw Victoria Smurfit was in the series of "Ivanhoe" in which Susan Lynch plays Rebecca (VS played Rowena).

Now I have to stop writing and get back to work before I get sucked in altogether!

Omg I'm watching the funniest thing ever. Stephen Tompkinson is pretending to be a monkey as we speak.
I just got home and I turned on the TV and Stephen was on The Paul O'Grady Show. I missed his actual interview and then there was this guy who pretends to be a monkey so they all had to have ago. It was hilarious.

You are so lucky to be able to turn on your TV and having even a prayer of seeing ST. What channel are you watching?

This whole BK and ST thing just might get me to buy cable here in the US. My kids will be delighted if that happens. We're one of the few hold-outs. (I can't believe I said that- I'm the one who never watches TV).

And yes, that eyebrow is phenomenal!!

Just ordered Brassed Off on DVD- waiting for it to arrive.

It was on a channel called ITV.
OK now i have more time I'll tell you what he had to do. Stephen, Paul and if any of you watch Coronation Street Shelly had to do it as well.

First they had to kind of make a weird face and then shout like a monkey
Then they had to scream like a monkey and then they got this glass bottle or something and they screamed into that. I was laughing to hard by now to really remember everything.
Now for the bit where I nearly fell of my chair. He got them all (apart from Shelly because of the top she was wearing) to bend down and walk like a monkey with both hands on the floor and there feet pointed outwards. So they did that for a moment then he told them to run like a monkey which was the funniest thing I've ever seen because the Monkey guy crashed into Paul O'Grady and sent a bin flying with banana's in it. All the time Stephen was just running around the stage whilst Shelly commented on how good he was at been a monkey.
Then they went and sat down again and Paul said something like Well Stephen you can go to the theatre (I can't remember which one now) and when they ask what you did at tea time you can say you ran around a studio been a monkey. I'm presuming he was promoting a play he was doing. I'm still gutted I missed the interview. If only it hadn't been chucking it down with rain I'd have been home in time but I waited for it to stop. If someone says the name of a theatre I'll know it. Something house maybe? Robson Green did a few plays there.

Anyway I hope it's repeated one day because I seriously couldn't breath for laughing after seeing it.

Stephen Tompkinson is in "Cloaca" in the Old Vic in London at the moment. He was on the Richard and Judy show on Channel 4 promoting it about 3/4 weeks ago. Here is the link to it(I hope)otherwise just paste it into your browser. If that doesn't work then type in whatsonstage.com and use the search at the top right of the screen.

Jo, you will love "Brassed Off." I've been trying to tell a friend of mine that anyone who can steal a movie from Ewan McGregor, and darn near take it from Pete Postlethwaite as well is worth watching. Seriously, this film has a top-notch cast. The writing and acting are excellent. ST nearly takes the entire show, but PP grabs it back for himself at the end, which is entirely fitting. Ewan McGregor ain't bad (when is he ever -grin-), but ST is really the standout. I won't tell you what happens, but if you think Peter has an anger problem...

I would call the tone of "Brassed Off" very *angry*. I agree that it's an excellent movie, but from one viewing two years ago, the major impression I took away was that everyone in it was furious!
Funny story- I actually saw "Brassed Off" before starting to watch Ballyk, and for the first few episodes I kept wondering where I had seen Fr. Clifford before. And then I realized oh, of course, he's the depressed clown guy! I wonder what it would be like to see "Brassed Off" again now...

Showtime is airing "Evelyn" several times this week. Bosco Hogan is a priest - in his first sceene he punches out Pierce Brosnan. It's based on a true story. The end is a real tear-jerker. Oh, and Frank Kelly (Fr. Jack from "Father Ted") is in it as well. I did a double-take because I didn't recognize him playing a nice, upstanding guy;
