To upload I'm pretty sure you either need a tv capture card in your computer so that it works like a recorder (thats how my friends uploads things) or you can get wires to fit in the back of the tv to the computer. (I'm totally guessing at that part but you can normally shove wires into most electronics and get something working lol.)
I think if I ever go back to England I'll buy a tv capture card because you can set it like a video recorder and go out and leave it and it will record at the time it should and put things straight on DVD or watch it on the computer.

ABB and Brian, thank you for answering my question. Brian knows this, but in the US there are four channels that still broadcast "on air", so to speak. The one that seems to pick up British programming is the one we call PBS, nominally "public" broadcasting. The other three are ABC, CBS, and NBC. There are tons of channels referred to as "cable", though they are also available by satellite. BBC America is one of these. I have stopped watching it since BallyK went out of their line-up, as there are only so many home and wardrobe make-overs one can stand. I do sometimes catch UK programming on my local PBS affiliate; shows such as As Time Goes By and My Hero. If BBCA wants to start picking up ITV, I might start watching it again, as well as PBS, History, and Animal Planet channels. Thanks again for answering my question, I will check back in on the alumni thread in hopes of finding something that might show up here, once in a while.

Lavender, there are a few DVDs with Gina McKee's television performances on them. The box set of The Forsyte Saga is available and so is The Lost Prince. I absolutely loved The Lost Prince (I cried buckets over that) but I wasn’t so keen on The Forsyte Saga. I didn’t find McKee convincing as Irene and Damian Lewis was terrible as Sommes. The old BBC black and white version was much better.

I looked into getting a DVD recorder. Hum. There's one I'd like but it costs a lot so I'll just have to save for it. Apparently, you can get ones with hard disks in them AND they have a VCR. Ideal for what I want to do – namely to drastically reduce the ever increasing pile of soccer, gaelic, hurling and motor sport videos. Anyway, I registered with UKNOVA. I got through in a few seconds, which doesn't seem to be the norm?? Even if I had a TV capture card, I still don't reckon I could figure out this uploading / downloading business. Will a review of Wild at Heart do?

Oh, Bronn......I loved Forsyte Saga. I thought Gina McKee was perfect and that Damien Lewis was fantastic. I suppose if I had seen the orginal to begin with, I would be rather biased as well. Once you have seen and loved one production, no other version is ever quite as good. I can understand that.
Yes, The Lost Prince was wonderful. Such a heartbreaking story. And the very end, with Lalla and Georgie looking back.... I feel teary just thinking about it.
Thanks for the recommendations, anyway. I've just about collected everything she's been in that can be bought. She's done so many TV movies that never made it to dvd, and that's what I'm after.

I too was a major fan of the recent Forsyte Saga, and I though Damian Lewis was just brilliant as Soames. But then, I didn't see the original either.

It's a great story, but the original was so much better than the more recent version. Gina McKee could not compare to the earlier Irene, an actress named Nyree Dawn Porter. And Eric Porter's Soames was infinitely more memorable. Incidentally, for Monarch of the Glen fans, Fleur, Soames' daughter was the young, lovely Susan Hampshire. (who grew up to be Archie's mother.)

Absolutely Thea. When you've seen the older version and the way Soames and Irene interact, the recent one just doesn't reach those levels. Yes, it's not a polished looking as the new version – it being very much a studio production and in black and white - but even so, I thought it was great. I bought the videos for my Mum a few years ago because she had always said that she loved it.

Lavender, the bit that made me cry hardest in The Lost Prince was when Lalla just loses it in the kitchen in front of Queen Mary after Johnny dies.

I cried during that part too, Bronn. Such great acting between those two women. There were several parts in that film that got to me, and I do not cry easily.
I also cried watching The Blackwater Lightship a while back. I must be getting mushier the older I get

Crissi, and anyone else who was shut out of UKNova - I just succeeded! I'd gotten into the habit of making an attempt any time I was on line, and today it worked!
Now, am I going to need a lesson in how to use it?

Thea, the first thing you must do to use UKNova is to download a client. I use Bit Tornado but there are many others you can find them by clicking on the links at UKNova. I would then suggest you read the frequently asked questions and the rules.

Great site Brian--Bye the bye,I think it was Aesop who first recommended "Hamish Macbeth" I was hooked on the first episode, great lead actor, then my hopes were dashed when I saw the last one! It was only four episodes long.It ended with Hamish being in love with two women. Aesop, tell me there's more that I'm missing!!!

Terry, there were 3 series altogether. Series 1 and 2 had 6 episodes each, and series 3 had 8. I agree with you, it was an excellent programme.

As I remember Hamish Macbeth was more like 20 episodes over 3 seasons. It's been more than 5 years since I last saw it on TV. It was a wonderful series with some memorable characters and quite reminiscent of that other series, BallyK.

Be sure and record "West Coast Story" from series 1 next time they play it in your area as they don't include it on the dvd, some rights thing, it seems. Series 3 comes out on dvd here in the UK in April, I see.

Ok, Irishgirl and Thistle...

I'm embarrassed. I have the teapot, and it is not nearly as tacky as you might suppose! And I KNOW tacky-- you should meet her (my mother-in-law!) The teapot is actually quite nice. I have gotten many compliments on it, and it sits neatly in my curio with all my Wicklow Vale pottery and Belleek.

Not to be insulted by your comments, as I am sure you'd change your mind if you saw it in person. It is lovely.

I'm with you, Crissi. When you're as obsessed as we clearly are, something as fun as a teapot from one of the best shows ever in which you've invested far too much time and emotion brings a smile and a warm fuzzy and maybe a bit of longing. I think it's cool.

I apologize if I sounded cold on my last reply. I was just remembering my brother's comments when he first saw it. He is a super yuppy- and he sees no value in Belleek, either. (If he'd have discovered it before me, THEN it would be worth haveing. Anyway, his wife had just bought me a Belleek vase for my birthday, and when I went to put it in the curio he chided, "Ooh, right next to the GOOD flea market finds!"

Regardless, it is quite nice. I wasn't offended, I was just stating that you wouldn't find it half as trashy if you saw it in person. If I get a chance, I'll take some pix and post them for you.

I think I actually got mine off ebay for a STEAL @ $25... maybe $28. It was less than $30, I know. Seemed a fair price to pay after my husband bought me an antique Belleek teacup for $45!

Where were you trying to order from? I beleive they have them at the avoca shop. (This, I believe is in the actual Fitzgerald's.) I'll find their address and post it for you.

i like beleek. i'm sorry if i sounded critical. i am not a fan of things that look like one thing but are really something else. (a teapot that looks like a pub, for instance.) but certainly the word "trashy" never came to mind.

and i can just hear your brother's comments. i have a brother exactly like that. he thinks my whole house is tacky, and he says so quite gleefully, every chance he gets.

Isn't it amazing how different siblings can be in terms of taste? I really like my sister's house, but I wouldn't make any of those furnishing or decoration choices for my own house (except for her kitchen, which is fabulous!) Her place has dark rich colours on the walls and floors, dark blue, gold, purple, deep raspberry, it's bold and makes a real statement. Whereas I was quite happy for years with the magnolia paint the builders left, and when I finally did repaint I still chose pale, neutral colours.

Luckily Brian and I have done okay so far when choosing things for the home. We haven't had a "Really? You like that???" moment yet.
