I bought my CyberHome CH-DVD 300 at Best Buy this spring. It is PAL/NTSC out of the box. Target sells another model which is NOT, so do be careful. A few years ago, I bought a Sungale (region-free, format-free, copy protection off) on eBay. It worked great until it made a weird noise and started billowing smoke, heh, heh. Ebay is a fine place to look for things like this, but there are other sites out there, too, that sell them. They all claim they have the best chips, picture quality, sound, etc. There is a website called www.nerd-out.com that can be helpful but a bit overwhelming when choosing a region-free, format-free player. If you have a specific brand and model number, then it's easier to pick through all the info on nerd-out. I've heard that Wal-Mart carries some. After looking around a bit, it seemed easiest to get the one at Best Buy. I would call them back and ask them if they have that specific player in the store. Maybe the person you talked to just wasn't aware of it, or maybe they've sold out. One thing I've heard, though, which is frustrating, is that the model I bought sometimes doesn't play region 2 DVDs. I don't actually have any yet (I've recently ordered With or Without You), so I can't address that issue. It's a lot of information to throw at you and none of it very helpful, I'm afraid. But do check with Best Buy again. Or check their website and see if they still can get one for you even if they don't have any in the store. Hope this helps a little. --AmyK IP: Logged |

Hi, again. I just checked the Best Buy website, and they list the Cyberhome DVD player I mentioned. It's the 300S, which is the one I have. It's $41.99 and can be delivered to your home or your nearest store. I checked nerd-out, too, and it's the older generation of the 300 that won't play the region 2 DVDs, so you should be OK with it. Good luck to you! --Amy IP: Logged |

Thank you so much Amy, I also checked the web site and found it. I guess the in store employees don't understand multi region. I also found a website after googling Sungale and they have a ton of multi region DVD players. Let me know how your Region 2 DVD works. J IP: Logged |

Sorry. The website WAS dvdoverseas.com Maybe they've vanished. Cyberhome products are a gamble. I have a friend who has one that's cool and one that died. Stick with a name brand - we have a multi-region JVC at work - it plays British discs no problem. I put "overseas dvd" into google and came up with a bunch of responses. IP: Logged |

I've heard JVCs are the best ones out there. I opted for the CyberHome because I could buy it in town and it was cheap. I figured if it didn't work, I could easily return it. I was suspicious of buying a cheapie, but I've had no problems. IP: Logged |

I hate beating this to death, but I just remembered I do actually have a region 2 DVD. I forgot all about it. A friend in Germany sent it, and I guess it left little impression on me. Anyway, it plays just fine. All the rest I have are 1, 4, or 0, and they all work, too. IP: Logged |

Thanks Amy & Morris for taking the time to give me your opinions & help on multi-region DVD players. I am happy to report my DVD's of ST are on their way from Amazon UK & my Toshiba multi-region DVD player is on it's way from DVD Overseas. I can't wait!! Both are promised for next week, the only thing better would to be have them now as we wait out the hurricane. J IP: Logged |

Cool! Congratulations on your DVDs and your cool new player! What DVDs did you order? I hope you stay safe through the hurricane. Best wishes. --Amy IP: Logged |

I ordered the Drop the Dead Donkey videos. Hurricane has passed us again, we've been very fortunate. Hope all others are safe. J IP: Logged |

GG - I am so glad that you were not adversely effected by the hurricane. I don't believe that we have many from Florida who contribute to this forum. IP: Logged |

While Florida got off somewhat easily, New Orleans has a lot to face on Monday. IP: Logged |

Just saw James Nesbitt in "Go Now." He was crude--fantastically filthy. I also finally saw Stephen Tompkinson in the Miss Marple episode "Murder at the Vicarage." It was interesting to hear him speak so differently from other things he's been in--his inflections and cadence were different. He also looked a lot older! At the end there was a behind-the-scenes featurette where Geraldine McEwan (Miss Marple) said Stephen was "delicious...just delicious. And so witty." IP: Logged |

Anyone catch "In the Name of the Father" on the Biography channel last night? I fell asleep and my VCR is posessed by Satan, himself. Anyway, did anyone tape this? I saw many many BK alumni in this, as well as some of our other British/Irish favorites. Bosco Hogan, Pete Postlethwaite, "Rosarie", Judge "Micky Bradley", Emma Thompson, Frankie McCafferty, Daniel Day-Lewis, Gerard McSorley (from Veronica Guerin), and Tina Kellegher! was it even any good? quote: I saw it dubbed, but maybe is not the translator's joke, when DI Slack declared "HE (Slack) don't like the church and the anglican priest... It remembered him to the marriage.." It was funny to hear it from ST that he don't like the priest! I belive! His carrier's first few year was just a fight against that "handsome priest-lad" who was in the Ballyk! ST is so proud in the interviews when tell that his wife didn't saw the Bk-series before they met. IP: Logged |

Forgive me if anyone's mentioned this yet, but I don't think they have. Our not-exactly-favorite Miss Clark features rather prominently in the new movie The Brothers Grimm that's in theaters now. And apparantly she's in the Cave too? I haven't seen that one, so I don't really know, but that's what imbd says... It was quite interesting to see her in the Brothers Grimm though; she looks so different! Rather different voice inflection, accent, or something and her hair's quite a bit longer, she's very tan, and plays such a different character. Needless to say, my friend thought it was pretty funny when I screeched (loudly) in the middle of the movie "She's in Ballykissangel!!!" IP: Logged |

Heya, if you want to see Lena Headley/Jennie Clarke in a good film, watch Disney's live-action version of The Jungle Book. It also stars John Cleese. It is a very good movie, and that's actually where I knew her from before Ballyk. Therefore, I don't have a first impression problem with her like others may. IP: Logged |

I saw Lena Heady in Merlin, Possesion and Remains of the Day. So I didn't have a bad first impression, either. I also didn't think Jennie Clark was so bad......who could blame her for falling in love with Peter? She was pretty forward, but I guess she thought he was worth it. Crissi- Tina Kellegher was in In the name of the Father?? Who was she? I did see the Judge and Padraig, but other than that, I noticed no ballyK people. IP: Logged |

The first thing I ever saw Lena Headley in was something called Soldier Soldier. She played a young soldier's wife, who loses her husband just as they decide to have a baby so I try and think of her in that rather than in Ballykissangel, because it was hard not to like her after seeing it. I think I ended up crying when she was in Soldier Soldier lol. IP: Logged |

Last night I watched Hotel Splendide with ST and earlier this week watched With or Without You with DK. Hotel Splendide made me laugh; it was an unusual movie, one that I think a few members of my family might enjoy as well, but we're a bit odd in our sense of humor. With or Without You was mainstream and a fine movie, but nothing that would make it onto my must-force-this-on-others list. Oh, and I was watching an Oscar Wilde DVD the other day, and there was a documentary at the end called The Life and Loves of Oscar Wilde wherein Tony Doyle did a voice. That was a fun surprise. Veggie, How did you see Hotel Splendide? I can't find it for sale in US or UK. I agree With or Without You was OK. I think Dervla deserves better parts. IP: Logged |

veggie- Tina Kellegher was a policewoman in the film (In The Name of the Father) I somehow missed Peter Caffrey (Padraig) I only got to see bits- not the whole thing. BTW_ did you just LOVE Hotel Splendide or what? Now you know why the original title was Hotel Sordide. That was my first experience with Toni Collette, also. I like her very much, now. quote: I love Toni Collette! My first experience with her was in Muriel's Wedding, ages ago. She gained a lot of weight for that role, and when I saw her again, I didn't even know it was the same person. Anyway, I think I'm going to have to watch Splendide again. It was so weird. I loved Desmond's shoes--well, was fascinated by his shoes. --Amy IP: Logged |

Just saw "Rosemary and Thyme" on PBS. I didn't see any BK folks but the lady who played Justine on Monarch of the Glen had a major role. I enjoy these mysteries, it's nice to have a new series to watch. IP: Logged |

Last night, as I was settling down to watch the latest installment in the Home Box Office series “Rome,” I spotted the name Lorcan Cranitch in the opening credits. Sure enough, he showed up. He played an evil businessman named Erastes who hires ex-Centurion Lucius Vorenus to act as a Mafia-style goon; but Vorenus is disgusted by what Erastes wants him to do, and quits. Cranitch is a little older, a little heavier, and clean-shaven, but it was him all right, and he gave a “dillon” of a performance. (Sorry, I couldn’t resist that!) IP: Logged |

I ran across the very end of an old Father Ted episode on BBC America, about a "Song for Ireland" in the Eurovision Song Contest -- and there was good old Peter Caffrey (Padraig) playing a rascally promoter. I wish I'd seen the whole thing. IP: Logged |

Oh, Chuck! I hope that show up on my Father Ted marathon tape I have somewhere. (As with everything I own-- it is SOMEWHERE!) I'll keep my eye out for it. I DID come across my Christmassy Ted video, though. I watched it instead the last of season three yesterday. It was funny. I can't stand the man who played Fr. Unctious, though. He was the same man that played Gilligan in Veronica Guerin. He gives me the creeps just to look at him. IP: Logged |

For those of you that watch HBO's Rome, did you notice another BallyK alum? Kerry Condon (Octavia) played Mairead on BallyK. I saw the episode Love's Labours on Saturday (Mairead had a crush on Fr.Aiden) and that's when I made the connection. I love her on Rome. IP: Logged |

Angela, I own that DVD of poetry. I thought some of it was very good, I didn't care much for the poems that were selected for Stephen Tompkinson. I did like the work of Rupert Penry Jones who is Dervla Kirwan's new partner. IP: Logged |
