8 - The Power and the Glory
‘I’m on the side of Justice.’
Gulliver hits the big time when he takes on a potentially
explosive case and Dunbar finds himself left on the
side-lines.
When Foad Al Mellouk, a Moroccan business man is brought
to Westoe Road nick, it’s as if there’s
a royal visit. Armed coppers swarm the corridors and
take over the custody suite and Superintendent Jackson
is on hand to hand-pick the best duty for the job, Gulliver.
Gulliver takes this opportunity as a chance to shine
and to be involved in a case that’s slightly more
exciting than the usual Mach Three Razor theft. It’s
pretty clear to Gulliver that Foad is innocent, but
as far as Dunbar’s concerned, he should give it
up, Gulliver will never win against the might of the
Anti-terrorism squad. Gulliver is already fired up and,
determined to prove Foad’s innocence, he goes
out of his way to collect the evidence to prove this.
Meanwhile Dunbar can’t bear to admit that he
would have loved the chance to defend such a high-profile
case but instead is left to deal with the usual trivialities.
Dooey is a case in point. Having tried to steal a frozen
steak, he got into a fight with the shop owner and was
arrested for assault. Dunbar easily runs rings around
the prosecution, the bench and even his own client,
but as usual his genius goes unrewarded. Once again
it is painfully clear to him that it’s his fate
to deal with petty cases, and to be surrounded by idiots.
