January 9, 2005

'See, you're just like me. Only Stupid.'

As the new trainee in the criminal law firm of Bagnall & Dunbar, Theodore Gulliver discovers he has a lot to learn. Unfortunately for him, Bruce Dunbar is the man who’s going to teach him.

Episode Two – TIC the Box
January 16, 2005

'The more truth you tell me, the fewer option we have.'

Gulliver’s education continues as Dunbar tries to show him the benefits of co-operating with the police. But it’s Dunbar who ends up with blood on his hands - and his shirt.

Episode Three – Little Criminals
January 23, 2005

'Don't spend my money on psyche reports. I can tell you for nothing the kid's buggered.'

Dunbar tries and fails to curtail Gulliver’s desire to stop and scoop. And Sarah makes herself unpopular by sticking to the letter of the law.

Episode Four – The Value of Nothing
January 30, 2005

'What kind of scum would be stupid enough to do a lawyer's when there's a chemist across the street. What do they want to do? Snort the paperclips?'

Dunbar is apoplectic when his office is burgled by one of his clients. Maybe this is the perfect opportunity for some self-examination?

Episode Five– The Soft Spot
February 6, 2005

‘Manners. I don’t care what you do with your life as long as you’ve got good manners.’

When Dunbar smartens up for a favourite client, Sarah accuses him of actually caring. Gulliver, however, is getting tougher, and fears he’s turning into his boss.

Episode Six – The Sins of the Father
February 20, 2005

‘250 grand a year. For that money, we could put him through Eton in his own private yacht and still get a chunk of change. But what do we get if we send him to prison?’

Dunbar is forced to take responsibility for his self-harming teenage daughter. Gulliver tries to garner sympathy for a drug-dealer with AIDS.

Episode Seven – Three Monkeys
February 27, 2005

‘Whitehall wisdom states that a prime cause of juvenile crime is the break up of the family unit - so why in shit’s name try and propagate it?’

When he is forced to defend a blind racist, Gulliver has an identity crisis. Meanwhile Dunbar refuses to intervene in a violent marriage.

Episode Eight – The Power and the Glory
March 6, 2005

‘I’m on the side of Justice.’

Gulliver hits the big time when he takes on a potentially explosive case and Dunbar finds himself left on the side-lines.

Episode Nine – A Life of Grime
March 13, 2005

‘Look up principles and you’ll read, ethics, philosophy, morality. Not skiving off work to piss about in court for a few hours.’

While Dunbar faces a financial crisis, Gulliver gets a visit from his dad, and learns he’s become his own man.

Episode Ten– Damaged Goods
March 20, 2005

‘You see, gravitas and mercy, what else do you need to be a judge?’

Sarah’s ambitions are thwarted when she realises she’s in trouble and Dunbar’s the only man who can help.

Episode Eleven – A Dying Breed
March 25, 2005

‘I don’t care who bankrolls me. If it folds, I’ll have it.’

Dunbar is tempted by a financial offer from a smarter class of criminal. Gulliver is out of his depth in a domestic situation which is resolved by a surprisingly sympathetic Sarah.

Episode Twelve – The Decline of English Murder
March 25, 2005

‘I can’t get it up for scum like that any more. The stiffie’s not there.’

Dunbar meets an old colleague and wonders if it’s time to make a change now that the fire is burning out. But can Gulliver change his mind?
