Ahead of the Class

Marie Stubbs (JULIE WALTERS), one of Britain's most highly respected headmistresses, sweeps into the notorious St George's School in North London. Five years earlier, St Georges' popular headmaster, Philip Lawrence, was murdered at the school gates.

Having agreed to come out of retirement to save this ailing school and armed with two trusty deputies, a wealth of experience and a quiet determination, her "mission impossible" is a simple one: to get this school off "Special Measures" in just fifteen months or see its doors closed forever.

Stubbs now faces a catalogue of problems. Disheartened teachers, consistently disrupted lessons, bullying, violence, vandalism and truancy are the tip of the iceberg. Respect, rules and regulations have long been forgotten and most of the 600 pupils treat the school as a youth club, turning up when and if they please. It is clear from the outset that the governors, the Diocese, the press, parents, teachers and children have all long since lost faith in St George's.

With the school temporarily closed, the drained and despondent faces of the teachers who turn up to meet the 'taskforce' - Stubbs and deputies Sean Devlin (REECE DINSDALE) and Tracy O'Leary (HANNAH YELLAND) - betray a 'seen it all before' attitude. Stubbs quickly realises that they will be as difficult - if not more so - to win over as the pupils....

With 10 million viewers on ITV, this was the most  watched single drama, and has since been nominated for a string of awards.
